Term 2
Term 2 is well under way. Here are some highlights about what we'll be studying:
ELA - starting T.U.S.C. as a way to improve and practice public speaking skills, listening to a read aloud called "Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events", continuing to explore different written genres and literacy skills in comprehension
Math - continuing to build fluency with basic facts, and flexibility with mental math strategies, understanding the important role place value places when computing multi-digit numbers, learning about area and perimeter and 2D/3D shapes, beginning to review fractions
Social Studies - New France, early British colonization, the fur trade
Science - The Human Body

Term 1
In ELA, students will begin learning and applying different genres for writing. We will focus on personal narratives, letter writing, and descriptive writing during the first term. English Language Arts is incorporated in all subject areas.
In science, we are currently learning about weather. In class activities include interactive demonstrations, hands-on experiments, and developing skills for problem solving and critical thinking in order to design a tool that measures weather.
In social studies, we will learn about the First Nations' communities that were in our country long before any others. We will learn about how these communities lived long ago, and incorporate some current day Aboriginal/First Nations' values into our classroom community.
In math, our focus for the first term is to make sure we know all division and multiplication facts to 9x9 quickly and accurately. We are also learning about and practicing several strategies for solving multi-digit problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We won't immediately learn about the "traditional algorithm" of setting up numbers vertically, but instead will focus on strategies that can be solved mentally, require a strong understanding of place value, and allow students to develop a deeper number sense. Below are some of the strategies we're reviewing and learning for addition and subtraction. Ask your child to show you how to use them!
Homework Reminders:
Please note that when special projects need to be completed at home, students will record the deadline in their agendas. While it is their responsibility to work on these projects independently, reminders about submitting required work on time from parents would be appreciated.
